I found my first piece by Chris Carter at a specialist ceramics sale in Macclesfield. It was the surface that stopped me - a pale, stone-textured piece, almost geological, like something pulled from the earth. The form was unusual too: wide and shield-shaped, rising to a concave neckline that looked unmistakably like a human clavicle. I picked it up, and just like that, I entered the world of ceramics and studio pottery.

That was the beginning of what has become a small but deliberate collection. I have now owned four pieces by Chris Carter, and I’m not done yet.

Who is Chris Carter?

Born in 1945, Carter set up his first studio in 1971 and has been making pots for over fifty years. He trained at Stoke-on-Trent College of Art and was tutored by Derek Emms and Geoffrey Whiting, serious ceramicists from the British studio pottery tradition. He later became Potter in Residence at Warwick Museum.

What sets Carter apart was, in my opinion, his work, but he also kept prestigious company. He was a close friend of Lucie Rie, one of the most significant studio potters of the twentieth century, who reportedly told him he threw pots better than she did. He was also deeply influenced by Hans Coper, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, and Ben Nicholson. They tell you what kind of maker Carter is: someone working at the intersection of sculpture and vessel, form and surface, the ancient and the contemporary.

His work is held in the Sainsbury Collection, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, and numerous public and private collections across the UK and internationally. In 2016, a full monograph retrospective, Just Pots, was published by ceramic curator Stuart Dickens.

What makes a Carter piece a Carter piece

There is a signature style that runs through everything he makes, even when the pieces look very different from one another. I’ve owned a pale, stone-textured bust vase, an angular, Coptic-influenced vessel with flared shoulder wings, a deep-brown stoneware with a brushed-gold glaze, and a classic, narrow-necked vase in warm toffee brown with vertical scratch marks revealing the raw clay beneath. They don’t look like siblings. But they unmistakably came from the same maker, just at different stages of his career.

The thread that connects them is this: Carter walks a fine line between richness and simplicity, which is genuinely hard to achieve and even harder to describe. The glazes are complex, built up in multiple layers, fired, then partially ground back by hand, sometimes incorporating flint and materials from the landscape he has farmed and worked his whole life. The surfaces are rich. But the forms themselves are quiet. They don’t compete. They don’t shout.

That matters more than it might sound. A piece that shouts is easy to buy and hard to live with. A piece that is quietly extraordinary gets better every time you look at it, and sits comfortably in almost any room.

The Coptic piece

I bought two of my Carter pieces at the same sale - the bust vase and a second vessel that has what I can only describe as a Coptic quality. An hourglass form with angular shoulder wings that flare outward like a collar, vaguely ceremonial, vaguely Egyptian, but very striking. It was the first piece I sold, to a friend who had been watching the business from the beginning and believed in it before it had much to show for itself. She bought it immediately. I like that it went to someone like that.

How to identify his work

Carter used an incised CC mark from 1971 to 1986, working in Atherstone, Warwickshire. His later work is marked “CCP” — stamped on the base. If you’re buying on the secondary market, the mark is your first point of verification. His later pieces (CCP) tend to be the more collectable, reflecting the full development of his distinctive glaze technique.

The glaze itself is a strong identifier once you’ve seen a few pieces. No two are identical — he developed his own glazes over decades, and they have a depth and variation that is difficult to mistake. Run your eye across the surface. There should be layers, not flatness.

Why I keep buying his work

Partly because it’s still relatively undervalued for what it is. A maker of this seriousness, with this exhibition history, these institutional collections, this calibre of influence and friendship, commands prices that still feel reasonable when you set them against the work.

But mostly because every piece I find is consistently made well. There is no version of a Chris Carter pot that feels like it was produced quickly or carelessly. That consistency, across fifty years of making, is not common.

I’m looking forward to broadening my collection this year. One of the hardest things is deciding which pieces to sell and which to keep. At the moment, I have two left to sell, but I might keep just one?

In an age when machines can now write, design, and even “imagine,” the craftsmanship of human-made items is growing in appeal. Tech is now capable of producing images that look hand-drawn, essays that sound like you wrote them, and interiors that suggest a curated, lived-in charm. Yet amid this efficiency, an unease is growing. There is a growing demand for products made with authenticity, texture, and care.

But this isn’t the first time we have seen this revolt against industrialisation. William Morris was grappling with this principle in the 19th century, though his concern was the factory assembly line rather than code.

The Original Radical

Morris was born in 1834 into a Victorian Britain transformed by industrial progress. After studying at Oxford, he joined a circle of artists and dreamers, including Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, who believed that art should do more than decorate life; it should define it. In 1861, he co-founded Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co., producing wallpapers, textiles, and furniture that rejected the soulless uniformity of machine-made goods.

His philosophy was simple but transformative:

“Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.”

He believed that the mechanics of labour were stripping both workers and buyers of joy. His answer wasn’t to reject progress entirely, but to insist that making should remain rooted in skill and intention.

The Market for William Morris pieces

Today, collectors pursue Morris’s legacy across many media, and as a dealer, I’m seeing the “emotional gravity” of these pieces translate into significant market value. While his designs are reproduced endlessly on the high street, the “first editions” are achieving record prices at auction houses like Lyon & Turnbull and Bonhams.

• The Kelmscott Press: Morris’s hand-set books are the holy grails of the book arts. A single leaf from the Kelmscott Chaucer (1896) can now fetch several hundred pounds, while complete, well-preserved copies of his major works regularly command between £40,000 and £60,000.

• The “Hammersmith” Rugs: The hand-knotted pile carpets produced at his Hammersmith workshop are the pinnacle of Morris textile art. Recently, pieces have achieved between £20,000 and £30,000 at auction, with rare runners and smaller mats consistently exceeding their estimates.

• The Human Stitch: We are seeing a surge in demand for original embroideries, particularly those worked by May Morris or the skilled women of “The Firm.” Small framed panels of “Olive and Rose” or “Vine and Acanthus” recently sold at Lyon & Turnbull for over £1,100, indicating that collectors are seeking a specific, imperfect human touch.

The call of craftsmanship

The values behind these designs have come back into sharp focus. In a digital world where everything can be reproduced, collectors are rediscovering the power of the authentic piece and the brushstroke you can see, as well as the stitch that isn’t perfectly aligned.

The rise of AI art and automated design echoes the industrial order that once inspired Morris to carve out his own handcrafted counter world. Far from being a nostalgic retreat, his response feels like a guidepost. It reminds us that creativity, at its best, isn’t about speed; it’s about presence.

Perhaps that is why collecting Morris feels so relevant in 2026. These pieces are physical arguments for slowness and patience. More than a hundred years later, his battle continues—not against the loom, but against the algorithm. In a world rushing toward frictionless design, Morris reminds us that resistance can be beautiful.

For a long time, Dior has felt very “of the moment”, glossy, commercial, and incredibly successful. But has it been as collectable? With Anderson now at the helm of both Men’s and Women’s, perhaps that’s about to change.

The Loewe Effect: From Retail to Museum

If we want to know what Anderson will do to Dior’s value, we only have to look at his eleven-year tenure at Loewe. He didn’t just sell leather; he sold a moment in fashion history. He took a long-standing heritage brand and turned its craft into a collectable asset.

We watched his work move from the shop floor to speciality auction houses in record time. His annual “Craft Prize” and collaborations with master weavers and ceramicists, like the Joe Hogan pieces, became antiques of the future. They weren’t just bags; they were signed, numbered artefacts. The infamous “Puzzle” bag has seen a 30–40% price increase at retail over the last decade, keeping its vintage resale value remarkably high.

He proved that thoughtful, creative pieces don’t depreciate; they mature.

The Shift from “Fashion” to “Collector’s Piece”

Jonathan Anderson is essentially a curator who also designs clothes. He shows a deep respect for materiality. He’s the kind of designer who could put 16th-century basket-weaving techniques on a Parisian runway.

For those of us who deal in “nice things,” this is a pivot point. If he treats Dior as a house of craft rather than just a house of luxury, the way we collect the brand changes:

• The “Weird” becomes the Investment: In the antiques world, the “oddities” are often what hold the most value. I suspect we’ll move away from logo-heavy “Book Totes” and toward his sculptural, surrealist pieces—the ones that, like his famous Pigeon clutch, feel like gallery objects.

• The Archive Re-read: Anderson is a researcher. He will likely pull obscure references from the 1950s that we haven’t thought about in decades. As a dealer, that’s a signal: the “quiet” vintage Dior pieces, the ones without the obvious branding, are about to become the most sought-after blueprints.

The Era of the Icon

Dior’s history is a patchwork of vintages. There is the Galliano era (1996–2011), known as the “High Baroque” of fashion and arguably the most collectable pieces of recent years, which gave us the Saddle Bag and newspaper prints that now command astronomical prices. Then came Raf Simons’ mid-century minimalism and Maria Grazia Chiuri’s commercial “Book Tote” era. Kerry Taylor Auctions, for instance, has seen landmark prices for pieces that carry true provenance—from 1950s Dior taffeta gowns selling for over £50,000 to John Galliano’s early "Vultures" kimonos reaching near six figures.

Speculating on the Market

In the antiques trade, we know that prices follow the “story.” Right now, the story of Dior is shifting from commerciality back to couture-level intellect.

When a designer with a collector’s soul takes over, the market for the original inspirations often heats up. I’m already looking at my watchlists for mid-century Dior millinery and early couture pieces. If Jonathan starts referencing the “New Look” through his characteristic whimsy, those original 1947–1957 pieces won’t just be vintage, they’ll be the archival pieces for a new era of fashion history.

Tip: Entry pieces such as jewellery will likely also creep up in value so keep your eyes peeled out there in the wild.

The Question of Value

Perhaps it’s too early to speculate on prices and values just yet, but an Anderson-era piece might be something to watch.

We are witnessing a profound shift in how we value "old clothes." The vintage market has moved far beyond the messy auction house rails; it is now about works of art. Speciality auction houses are reporting record-breaking sales that rival the fine art world.

Vintage Fashion Buyers Come Forward

Lately, there have been several signs that the Art & Antiques Market is on the rise again, after a few somewhat stagnant years. So what’s actually happening for the market in 2026, what clues point to a recovery, and what does that mean for us as collectors?

Recovery after the Post-Pandemic Boom

Following the Global crisis of 2020, the art and antiques market saw a crazy ‘sugar high’ in 2021-22, with record prices set across classic and contemporary art. However, this was fairly short-lived, and in 2024, prices dropped dramatically, with many analysts now believing the worst is behind us and signs of stability are ahead. It’s important to note that this is a market ‘balancing out’ rather than a definite sign of growth to come.

More transactions, even if prices are softer

Even though price levels have softened, the number of artworks and antiques changing hands has increased, which suggests stronger demand in the mid-market.

Younger buyers & the Growth of Digital Channels

Commentary from the Antiques market suggests it is picking up, driven by younger buyers and digital channels.

Younger customers are buying Antiques for their sustainability credentials as well as appreciating the individuality/character that these pieces offer. They appreciate the ‘story’ these pieces add to their homes and are increasingly driven by platforms such as Pinterest & Instagram, which help visualise the entire look.

Digital channels give newer buyers easier access to research and price transparency, making the market feel less intimidating. There is also a much broader crossover between interior design platforms and the Art & Antiques markets - greater cohesion than we have probably ever seen before for the mass market.

High Net Worth Individuals are staying in the game

It is thought that high-net-worth individuals (savvy investment-wise) are allocating more funds to investing in Art. A study says that these investors are allocating 20% of their wealth in 2025, up from 15% in 2024, with the wealthiest closer to 28%. They stated that they were optimistic about the market with little intention to sell, suggesting a stabilising environment rather than pointing to a distressed market. For the rest of us, that steady long‑term money tends to support confidence and pricing across the ecosystem.

Early signs in January 2026

Every January, London plays host to one of the world’s leading Art & Design Fairs in Battersea, London. It’s called the Decorative fair, and it’s a must-see if you are in the city at this time of year (or indeed the fairs they hold in the summer and autumn too).

Commentary from the fair’s exhibitors has cited this as their most successful fair to date, with strong interest from US buyers who came to London specifically for the event.

Whilst it is early in the year, and this is only one fair, hopefully it sets the scene for a wider optimism in our investment in curated interiors.

So what does all this mean for collectors and dealers

I think it gives us hope that investments made today will hold their value or continue to increase over time. I know many of our purchases are based on sentimental values, or pure art aesthetics or appreciation, but for many of us, value is key too, with our investment performing at multiple levels.

We have already talked about the increase in prices of Gold and Silver affecting the Antiques market today, but there are reasons to be optimistic that this trend will be seen across the wider Art & Antiques market.

My advice:

• It’s a good time to buy quality pieces, but always take your time. Don’t chase trends; buy pieces that genuinely move you and that you can see living comfortably with what you already own.

• Provenance, condition and ‘story’ matter more than ever as buyers get savvier — they’re often the difference between something that holds value and something that doesn’t.

• Because liquidity is better in the mid‑market, it’s easier to trade up: if you buy with intention, you can later let go of pieces that no longer serve you and use the proceeds to move your collection closer to what you really want.

What comes next?

With the world feeling so uncertain, it’s hard to make firm predictions about the future. For the Art & Antiques market, I’m cautiously optimistic about 2026. Personally, as a small dealer, I have already experienced much stronger demand this year than last, so let’s hope it’s a sign of things to come.

Of course, the market will remain selective: quality, freshness and realistic pricing will matter more than ever, so we must always take these into consideration.

Coming from a career in premium and luxury fashion, I’m familiar with this tension. I’ve stood on marble floors where a customer could spend a year’s salary before they’d even finished their first glass of champagne. I saw the extreme end of consumption, but it taught me something vital: the difference between buying for status and buying for soul. Now, I find myself asking: how do we justify the latter when the world feels so deeply impractical?"

It’s time to be practical

We are told to strip back to the basics. But my time in fashion taught me that 'price' and 'value' are rarely the same thing. The most practical item isn't the one that costs the least today; it’s the one that survives the next decade. A heavy linen napkin or a hand-blown glass isn't just a 'frivolity', it is a rejection of the disposable. True sustainability is longevity, and beauty is often the reason we keep something long enough to become sustainable.

Beauty and the soul

Surrounding ourselves with beauty isn't about ignoring the roar of the world outside. It’s about creating an oasis so we can actually handle it. We aren't staying silent about the plight of others; we are simply trying to regulate our own nervous systems. We are curators of our own peace.

• The Preservation of Craft: When we value a “nice” thing, we are valuing the person who made it, the hands that restored it, and the history it survived.

• The Emotional ROI: Our homes are the only places we truly control. If a specific shade of glaze on a ceramic bowl provides a moment of peace after a stressful day, that isn’t a luxury - it’s a gift to the soul.

Balance

I’m not suggesting we live in a state of opulence - I can’t afford that either, so it will never be on my radar. Balancing an appreciation for design with the reality of 2026 requires a shift in how we talk about collecting:

• Curation over Consumption: It’s not about more; it’s about better.

• Context Matters: Acknowledging that beauty is a privilege doesn’t make the beauty less real - it just, hopefully, means we appreciate it more.

• The “Cost-Per-Joy” Ratio: If an antique rug lasts forty years and makes you smile every morning, then the maths work.

The Bottom Line

If you’ve felt that pang of “should I really be caring about this right now?”—you aren’t alone. But don’t let the embarrassment kill your eye for detail. We need people who care about how things are made. We need people who see the value in the “unnecessary.”

Perhaps there is truth in the saying that a life lived purely for practicality isn’t a life at all.

It’s just an itinerary.

I don’t know about you, but it feels like there are increasingly more and more ‘quiet’ references to this design style in recent fashion and interior magazines - it’s popping up on my feed daily. Personally, I think it’s really interesting - it’s so distinct and probably a style you either love or hate, but why is it so popular again now? Perhaps the answer lies in what it brings to us at this current time - romanticism or escapism from the global news headlines of today. Perhaps our interiors have become too simple, and Art Nouveau touches add warmth and detail that complement modern trends toward simple ‘quiet luxury’. But will it make a comeback in its puritan form?

Art Nouveau

The Art Nouveau era is dated in Europe from 1890–1910. It represented a move away from the Victorian focus on historic forms and offered a new, fluid and decorative style inspired by nature and the Arts and Crafts focus on craftsmanship. It was another rejection of cluttered, mass-produced aesthetics, in favour of beauty in everyday objects covering a host of different mediums such as architecture, furniture, jewellery, graphics

What Made It Different

Born from the Arts & Crafts rebellion against industrial ugliness, Art Nouveau embraced Gesamtkunstwerk - total environments where every element harmonised. Modern materials like curved iron, stained glass, and concrete met handcrafted traditions, influenced by Japanese prints and botanical studies.

Signature traits:

• Flowing, asymmetrical lines

• Stylised nature (lilies, irises, peacocks)

• Muted jewel tones, gold leaf accents

• Ironwork tendrils, glass marquetry

Key Cities & Designers

When you think of Art Nouveau, there are a few key names & places that spring to mind. Designers who deserve much more of a deep dive in the future:

Paris (France): Alphonse Mucha’s flowing posters (Gismonda, 1894), Hector Guimard’s Métro entrances with lily-pad curves.
Brussels (Belgium): Victor Horta’s organic townhouses, like Hôtel Tassel (1893).
Barcelona (Spain): Antoni Gaudí’s bone-like Casa Batlló.
Glasgow (Scotland): Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s geometric roses.
Vienna (Austria): Gustav Klimt’s gold-patterned Secession works.

Current appeal: Warmth for minimalist interiors, organic shapes echoing current wellness trends. Mucha posters hit £20k+, Gallé vases £50k+, crisp silver £5k–15k at auction.

Collector Guide

What to seek:

• Clean ‘whiplash’ curves (fuzzy lines = later copies)

• Original patina, glass, enamel

• Named makers (Lalique, Gallé, Mucha)

Price entry points:

• Small jewellery/brooches: £500–2k

• Glass vases/perfume bottles: £2k–10k

• Furniture/lamps: £10k+

Where: These pieces can be found widely across Europe. Paris/Brussels auctions and fairs, 1stDibs, specialist fairs. Glasgow School silver offers British access.

Is it really coming back?

I guess the question is if it is really coming back, and the answer, as ever, is nuanced. In art, in fashion and detail, then yes, but in elements. It’s hard to imagine the same purist commitment to such a design movement these days.

You won’t find many new buildings calling themselves ‘Art Nouveau’ in 2026, but the movement’s DNA is everywhere—from Calatrava’s bone‑like bridges to Zaha Hadid’s flowing cultural centres. The love of organic curves and total design lives on, even if the label has changed.

Art Nouveau proves beauty can be modern. I have always been wary of ‘excessive’ or ‘fussy’ design in general, from interiors to clothes, but I feel myself drawn to this recently. Anyone else?

If you’ve been collecting art and antiques for a while, there comes a moment when you look around and realise: some pieces no longer feel like you or they ‘jar’ with the rest of the room. Tastes change, spaces change, or sometimes you just need the cash. I’ve been going through the editing process myself lately, and I’ve been asked what the factors you need to consider once you have made the cut are and decided what you want to sell.

1. Be clear on your goal: cash or upgrading?

You will make better choices if you decide what the sale is really for.

• If you mainly want cash, which is nothing to be embarrassed about, you’ll need to be realistic on price and open to dealer or auction options where you get less than full retail but faster results. Personally, these are my go-to because they’re the quickest and cleanest option.

• If you’re focused on upgrading, you can be more patient and deliberate, selling fewer pieces well and ring‑fencing the proceeds for one or two really special buys.

2. Sort pieces into “where should this actually sell?”

Not every piece deserves the same amount of effort or the same audience. I tend to think in three rough groups:

A. Stand‑out pieces
Named artists or designers, good furniture, rare design etc

• These suit: decent auction houses (general or specialist), consigning with a good dealer, or carefully chosen online platforms. If your collection is varied, then consider splitting it into different auction houses that have followings for certain specialisms, e.g. in the UK, we have ‘go-to’ auction houses for Oak interiors, silver, art, mid-century, Urban art, etc. These guys will typically achieve the highest price for you in that genre, so don’t feel pressurised into putting all your items into a ‘general’ sale unless logistically it makes the most sense for you and you can’t deal with multiple couriers, etc. As most auction houses now work with multiple online platforms, you still have a good chance of reaching your future buyer.

• When you approach them for valuation, you will need good photos and give them any information that will help the sale, e.g. where you bought it and if you have any further information on the item’s provenance that they can use to attract buyers to the piece even more. Some auction houses also let you bring items in for valuation, so this is worth keeping an eye out for, too, as some people may be happier to discuss the matter in person.

B. Nice but not extraordinary “decorative” pieces
Attractive, usable things that people will buy because they look good and are sensibly priced.

• These suit: regional auctions, online marketplaces, antiques/vintage platforms, or your own audience if you have one. I would include eBay and Vinted here, too.

• They need clear photos, simple descriptions, and realistic pricing to sell quickly.

C. Smalls, multiples and “why did I buy this?” pieces
The bits that accumulate in boxes – small frames, odd ceramics, brass, textiles that aren’t quite right.

• These suit: job lots at auction, car boot/yard sales, or “bundles” online (e.g. a box of smalls).

• They need: minimal effort; don’t overwork them.

A useful question is: “What is the most time‑efficient way to clear this?” Know the point at which these items just don’t hold any value anymore, and consider if a charity might benefit from them more s,o you don’t lose too much of your own precious time dealing with it only to get a very small return.

3. Research prices

You don’t need a full valuation for every item, but guessing wildly is how we end up disappointed.

For each group of pieces:

• Look up a few recent, comparable sales: same type, similar age, similar condition. Auction archives and online marketplaces like eBay are good for this.

• Notice the actual selling prices, not just the hopeful asking prices.

• Decide on a simple band in your head:

  • “I’d be very happy at £X”

  • “I can live with £Y”

  • “Below £Z, I’d rather keep it”

Remember to factor in fees and commissions if you’re using an intermediary (In the UK these can typically be 20% or more, but they vary, so always check before making your decision). Work backwards from what you want to receive, not from the headline price.

For very ordinary pieces, it’s often better to price a little keenly and let them go, rather than holding onto them for years.

4. Present pieces honestly and factually

When you’re selling your own collection, there’s a temptation either to oversell or to be almost apologetic. Try to land in the middle: honest and clear.

For each item:

• Note condition plainly: chips, hairline cracks, old repairs, missing bits, fading, over-polishing etc

• Mention any positives that matter: original finish, untouched surface, good colour, original upholstery (even if worn), clear marks, inscriptions, exhibition labels or provenance.

• If a small bit of work would truly help (a light clean, a new mount, a quick tighten of a loose handle), do it. If it won’t move the needle, don’t throw more money at it.

Think of your description as a favour to your future buyer: “Here’s exactly what you’re getting so there are no surprises.” Being honest is key to your reputation as a seller esp,ecially if this might become a regular thing for you.

5. Take a simple record before things leave

Things can get messy fast, so before anything goes out the door, you may want to spend five minutes with each piece and keep a record.

• Take one or two clear photos.

• Jot down: what it is, when/where you bought it (if you remember), and roughly what it cost and sold for.

6. Reserve the proceeds (if you’re upgrading)

If part of the point is to refine or upgrade your collection, treat the sale proceeds as a separate “collection fund” rather than letting them vanish into everyday expenses (unless you really need them there).

You might:

• Keep the money in a separate account or pot.

• Shortlist items you are now dreaming of

• Give yourself permission to wait for the right thing.

That way, selling doesn’t feel like a loss; it feels exciting!

Letting Go

Letting go of pieces you’ve lived with is rarely purely practical. There’s memory and sometimes a little bit of guilt tangled up in the decision, even if you have a list of the items you are dreaming about finding, ready to go.

On a personal note, I have shared how I am ready to sell some pieces of Urban Art pieces (bought around 2006-2010) that now look out of place in my home. I have now found a specialist Art auction house in East London to sell through - now I just need to get my pictures over there which is something I struggle to find the time to do it would seem.

After writing about Liberty last week, I found myself in a rabbit hole researching more about the artist, synonymous with the store, Archibald Knox. I think I am becoming a super fan. So here is a short post about the artist and his works, with a few tips on places to see his work in public collections.

Early Life on the Isle of Man

Born on the Isle of Man to Scottish parents, Archibald Knox grew up influenced by the island’s Celtic crosses and rugged landscapes. Trained at Douglas School of Art, he immersed himself in Manx Celtic motifs, creating designs that interlaced patterns, knotwork, and nature forms that would later define his career. By his 20s, Knox was teaching design and working as a freelancer, blending Arts & Crafts ideals with emerging Art Nouveau.

Liberty: Tudric & Cymric (1899–1912)

Knox began designing for Liberty around 1899, introduced via the Silver Studio. Liberty kept designers anonymous (a policy that is said to have frustrated Knox), but his output was enormous: over 400 designs for their Cymric (silver/gold) and Tudric (pewter) ranges.

• Tudric Pewter (launched 1902): Affordable “people’s silver” (or “poor man’s silver” as it was often termed) made by Birmingham’s W.H. Haseler. Knox’s designs featured minimalist forms with Celtic repoussé, abalone inlays, and organic motifs—jugs, trays, clocks, vases. Tudric democratised high design, with model numbers (often 4‑digits for Knox) stamped on bases.

• Cymric Silver: More luxurious, with enamels, gems, and intricate chasing. Knox’s belt buckles, brooches, and inkstands bridged Celtic Revival and Modernism.

Liberty’s catalogues hailed Knox’s work as “breaking away from convention,” creating a distinctly British Art Nouveau. He even designed Arthur Liberty’s gravestone.

Later Career & Knox Guild (1912–1933)

Knox left Liberty in 1912 after clashing with teaching examiners at Kingston School of Art—his “unorthodox” Celtic methods led students to form the Knox Guild of Design and Crafts (1911–1939). He briefly designed carpets in Philadelphia before returning to the Isle of Man, where he died in 1933. His influence faded as his style went out of fashion, but revival began in the 1960s.

Museum Highlights & Collector Appeal

Today, you can find examples of his work in the following museums and elite private collections.

• V&A Museum: Tudric teapot (c.1903, model 0409) and enamel brooches—showcasing his cane handles and “honesty” plant motifs.​

• British Museum: Cymric teapot with Celtic interlacing.

• Manx Museum: Card trays and crumb trays from the Tudric range.

• Cannon Hall Museum: Pair of Tudric vases (mid-1900s).

At auction, Tudric starts at £200–500 for smalls; choice Knox vases/clocks hit £2,000–10,000; Cymric rarities can exceed £20,000. Look for 4‑digit model numbers, enamel inlays, and sharp repoussé (line engraving). Note we also need to be aware of the many fakes on the market; Stephen Martin’s Archibald Knox (1995) is a great reference guide for his work.

Collecting his work today

Lately, there has been renewed and increasing interest in his works. Knox bridges eras: Celtic heritage meets modernist restraint, perfect for “quiet luxury” interiors. Tudric’s pewter is accessible (for now) yet investment-grade. As Liberty fans know, Knox was a quiet force behind their metalware dominance - collect him to own a piece of that story.

If you ask most Londoners which department store is their favourite, then I bet most of them will tell you it’s Liberty. If you have never visited it, then I would urge you to do so, especially if you ever plan to take a trip to London as a tourist.

From its first-class beauty hall to its curated fashion collection’s no other department store, in my book, comes close. Its legacy runs deep to people all over the world, so it’s no surprise to know that early or vintage Liberty pieces fetch considerable sums at auction or on the resale market. 1920s kimono-silk panels regularly make £800-3,000 at auction, while pristine Pre-Raphaelite-era scarves with exhibition labels can hit £4,000+. Highly prized silver or pewter pieces from the early 20th century (known as Cymric or Tudric) are constantly in demand in the market.

About Liberty and The Aesthetic Movement

The store was opened in 1875 by Arthur Lasenby Liberty, whose vision arguably fueled the Aesthetic Movement. He imported ornaments, silks and decorative objects from the East (Japan, India and China) to create an ‘Oriental Bazaar’ feel and mixed them perfectly with contemporary British design of the time. He was a leading taste maker of the time, and artists such as Whistler, Rossetti, Burne Jones and William Morris (among so many others!) were frequent visitors to the store, buying their rich materials and fans, for use in their studio portraits. William Morris also went on to have professional links to the store, as Liberty stocked his early wallpaper and textiles. Both shared a passionate rejection of industrial ugliness

Building an Empire and Design Legacy (1890s–1920s)

By the 1880’s, Liberty designed its own textiles, and some of those prints, such as Tana Lawn, are still iconic today. Apart from William Morris, who we have already discussed, and whose work was highly influential on Liberty’s own-designed range at the time, there are also several other designers whose names are also tied to this prestigious department store.

Better known as an architect, Edwin William Godwin also ran Liberty's costume department. His designs also tie back to the Pre-Raphaelite contemporary style of medieval dress, pulling away from the industrialisation of the time to a much more romantic style. Examples of these early liberty styles are on show in major collections such as the Met in New York and the V&A in London.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Archibald Knox are also big names associated with the early days of the store, both designing jewellery, silver & decorative objects with Celtic designs and Liberty motifs.

Moving with the Times

Other cultural moments linked to the store include the patronage of Liberty by Oscar Wilde, who is said to have worn a velvet Liberty suit on his 1882 US tour, which sparked transatlantic demand.

Liberty was also a key player in the flapper style of the 1920s and the post-WWII fashion movement when it opened an in-house design studio with key products such as printed scarves and dresses, boosting the store’s fortunes.

Modern Collaborations

Housing over 5,000 prints with impeccable provenance, Liberty's archive remains a creative treasure trove. Contemporary designers regularly license these patterns, proving delicate Edwardian florals are still relevant in the fashion market today - a testament to 150 years of design relevance.

Why Liberty Matters for Art & Antiques Lovers

As a child, I often visited the store with my family and on the upper floors of the department store, there were many (early day ) antique Liberty pieces for sale. Sadly, this area was reduced over time, but I’m pleased to see that, gradually, there has been a return towards showcasing and retailing these products through the antique dealer Patch Rogers, whose keen eye offers some of the best Liberty pieces on the market (in my opinion).

If you share my enthusiasm for Liberty’s style and that of the aesthetic movement, keep a close eye out for pieces coming up at auction. This is something that I will continue to search for in my business and my personal collection. The Price of Silver and Gold

This week, I wanted to explore what is happening with gold and silver prices in 2026 and what it means for collectors and the antiques market. Precious metals are at record highs, with gold and silver prices surging over the past year, raising questions about buying and selling and the growing risk of historic pieces being melted for scrap.

Right now, the prices of Gold and Silver are at RECORD highs. Gold is currently trading at 5,090 USD per troy ounce, up roughly 11% over the past month and about 80% year‑on‑year. Silver is trading around 103 USD per troy ounce, up over 40% in the past month and more than 230% year‑on‑year!! These prices are taken as of now (late January 2026) - see reference HERE for more details.

So what is driving these huge price increases? Generally, the driving factors are thought to be:

• Inflation and further fears about price instability

• Expectations of lower real interest rates (meaning people will get less from other financial investments such as stocks and shares, and banks, etc.)

• World politics and tensions (people keeping physical assets of value in their close possession)

• Central banks are buying precious metals as a way of diversifying their portfolios

• Industrial demand, especially for silver, is increasing for use in all sorts of manufacturing, from electronics to solar renewables.

So, for a whole host of reasons, the prices have gone up, but what does that mean for silver and gold collectors right now?

From a collector’s point of View

Back in 2018, I started collecting silver pieces, with a broad interest in items from fashion houses such as Cartier and Hermes, as well as more established silver specialists such as Asprey’s, and a selection of English and Irish pieces from the Georgian period onwards.

The appeal of silver to me at the time was in the fact I could appreciate the art and design of the pieces, but my right side of the brain was also satisfied by the fact that, by law, makers in the UK especially, have been required to stamp their makers mark, date and material (plated or solid silver etc) on their pieces for hundreds of years. When you collect art and antiques, tracing this sort of detail is often impossible, so being armed with this knowledge as a silver collector was extremely satisfying.

From a dealer’s point of view

Suddenly, enquiries about silver pieces have gone through the roof.

As many of you will know, I have a small antiques online store, and enquiries about silver pieces have gone through the roof in the past couple of months. Pieces I have offered for sale for years are suddenly being snapped up, and this is a great thing, for which I am truly thankful, but it’s also taught me a few lessons about this part of the antiques market. The first question buyers are asking: how much does it weigh?

Lessons Learnt

I have always known (or been aware) that silver and gold prices fluctuate and affect the antiques market, but what I didn’t appreciate was how some buyers are purely weight-focused and don’t appreciate the maker or the piece in its own right.

The ‘melt’ value of gold has become so much more apparent to me. I feel quite naive for not being so aware of this, but now I am like… “oh, I get it…” Sorry if this seems exceptionally stupid on my part, but I guess I am trying to be honest about a subject which I am learning about every day.

For those items I had on sale, I didn’t react quickly enough to online prices and found myself selling out of high-silver-content, weighty pieces because I didn’t reflect current market prices. I was happy to make the sales, but it turns out I was inadvertently running a ‘sale’ for these items as buyers snapped them up on weight alone.

One recent sale was a stunning Cartier tray in a Chippendale design. At 27 toz, it became worth more in melt value than the stunning piece of design and craftsmanship it actually held. I sold it internationally, and I can only hope that the buyer will appreciate the item for its beauty and that it won’t be lost or melted for a new purpose. I feel a sense of responsibility towards the piece, but I’m confident it’s in good hands.

But what else have we collectively lost?

So this brings us to the question that many people are asking right now. What else are we currently losing to melt and scrap? There have been reports of Georgian silver being sold as scrap. This kind of realisation stops you in your tracks. I guess we can understand old (19th-century) trophies, etc. (with no remaining sentimental or design value) being melted down, but there is a real risk of losing exceptional craft pieces as well.

To buy now or wait?

Personally, I don’t buy as much silver as I used to for no other reason than my tastes or interests have changed over time, and it’s not been my focus. But I still love it, and I still love silver jewellery too. Gold, unfortunately, has always been out of my price range, but I salute those who can afford to invest in those pieces.

Buying now or waiting until prices steady, although noone knows right now when that will be, is really about whether you fall in love with a piece or you are buying an item as an investment. From my experience, it’s a tough market right now to buy in, so I will continue to invest elsewhere until it becomes ‘affordable’ again.

The downsides of collecting silver

Without a doubt…..Cleaning it! As we know, silver and most metals tarnish. The downside of collecting and preserving them in their perfect state is the amount of cleaning required.

In my experience, it is best to keep silver pieces in a closed cabinet rather than leaving them exposed to air and sulphur, which can quickly cause them to tarnish. I use a simple glass cabinet from IKEA to store mine, as the alternative is to put them away, and what’s the point in buying something beautiful if you can’t see it? It doesn’t perfectly protect them (it’s not air-tight), but I have definitely noticed a difference from when I used to have those pieces on an open shelf.

I also recommend using a good quality cleaner such as Town Talk, which is gentle yet effective at removing tarnish.

Prices as a reflection of the Global Climate

From now on, I will keep a closer eye on prices and their impact on the market. The prices of gold and silver seem to be a barometer of the times we are living in, so on so many levels, we can only hope that they stabilise soon.

Short Creative Courses

I think this is possibly my favourite gift idea! 🎁

One of the things that really hit me over the past two years was how far I had drifted from doing the things I really love. At some point, the daily grind took over, and I didn’t have anything left in me to think creatively, let alone produce anything. This is something I plan to explore more of in 2026.

We are so lucky to have so many options on our doorstep, but these days you can also find great options online too - from candle and perfume making through to painting, digital design, pottery and cooking. A good place to start is Class Bento, which offers a wide range of courses at different price levels. City Academy also provides a wide range of options across the UK.

Or why not look at the courses on offer at some of our favourite creative institutes such as the Slade School of Art, St. Martins or London College of Fashion. There are so many more out there to match different budgets and interests. Sorry these are very London references but that’s my experience so far.

Gift Vouchers

Firstly, these are NOT a lazy choice for a present. They let your loved one pick something they actually want, and surely that’s the ultimate in thoughtfulness. Here are just a few ideas - personally I prefer small businesses but here is a mixture of big and small with some of my personal favourites in the pictures above 🤍

1. Books - With so many stores to chose from whether its Waterstone, Foyles or Daunt books are just two excellent choices to let your loved one plan their reading list for 2026. Personally I hope to finally visit Persephone Books in Bath this year or at least order some books. Most of their works are by women authors and their covers are to die for. They also offer a subscription service which sounds like a dream.

2. Art Materials - So many places to order vouchers from whether its the largest art stores such as Jacksons or Cass Art . For me the best place to receive a voucher from would be from Cornelissen and Son who are based near the British Museum and have been established since 1848 and has associations with J.M.W Turner himself.

3. Wine - Well it is Christmas and there are too many places to mention however, one place deserves a mention and is somewhere I visit every Christmas (even if I am buying from the lowest priced selection at the time). The place is called Berry Bros and Rudd and is located in St.James in the heart of London. It was founded in 1698 and the building itself is worth a visit if nothing else. Its the oldest wine merchant in Britain and is still family owned - something of a remarkable achievement.

4. Theatre, Ballet and Opera Tickets. What better than a gift of vouchers that can be used to book one of their favourite performances? All the major theatres and opera houses offer vouchers for sale and they would make the perfect gift especially as we head into January and need as many things as we can to brighten up our days.

5. Art or Antiques - You may find some smaller dealers offer Gift Vouchers, but you can be certain that the following companies will offer your loved one a great chance to find something they love in the new year: Vinterior, Pamono and Etsy.

As I end this post, I realise just how much I would love any of these gifts so if any of my family or friends are reading this…… I think I might just be your fussy friend 🎁

What’s your ideal Christmas Gift and are you still stuck for gifting ideas this year?

Some objects slip quietly into our lives, while others arrive carrying their history more openly. Some objects have an ‘ordinary’ past, but others have a much more ‘extraordinary’ back story. The marks of time, ownership and use sit just beneath the surface, waiting for us to research them and pay attention. These four 16th-century etchings belong very much to the latter. Their past is not something hidden, and I would love to share that story with you today.

These four 16th-century etchings have already lived several lives before reaching my hands. They were made in the Renaissance, passed through private hands, studied by one of the most important artists in British history, and have now been carefully restored and reframed to be lived with once more.

Three of the works are dancing scenes by Cornelius Bos (Flemish, 1506–c.1564). The fourth is a delicate floral roundel by Hans Sebald Beham (German, 1500–1550). Sir Joshua Reynolds (British, 1723–1792), the first President of the Royal Academy of Arts, later owned all four. Each still bears its original collector’s stamp from his estate sale in 1795 or an associated inventory number. That small physical mark places these works directly inside the working world of an artist who shaped how British art would be taught, collected and understood.

It is rare to find objects where the line of history still feels this tangible.

Every object carries its past with it. Sometimes that past is quiet and anonymous. Sometimes it is traceable, named and surprisingly close. These works bring the visual language of the Renaissance alongside the personal study habits of an eighteenth-century master. They hold both in the same surface of paper and ink.

Cornelius Bos was celebrated for his ability to convey movement and ornament with clarity and rhythm. His dancers feel energetic even now. There is nothing stiff about them. They twist, turn and lean as if caught mid-step. The human body in motion remains familiar across centuries and cultures. Looking at these figures today, it is easy to forget how long ago they were made.

By contrast, the floral roundel by Hans Sebald Beham is quieter and possibly my favourite. Beham was one of the most important German Renaissance printmakers, known for his precision and control. His approach to nature was not wild or romantic but considered and structured. The flower is balanced, intentional and calm.

The clarity of all four engravings makes it hard to believe that they were produced approximately 500 years ago, before Shakespeare was even born.

Centuries after they were made, all four entered Sir Joshua Reynolds’s collection. Before he became an institution builder and the public face of British art through the Royal Academy, he was a relentless student of images. He collected prints as working tools. He studied composition, anatomy, posture and expression through works like these. They were not decorative objects for him. They were part of how he learned his craft as an artist.

What transforms this from an interesting history into something much more personal is the stamp. Each etching still carries Reynolds’s original collector’s mark. It is small, easy to overlook, but it is everything. It is the physical proof that these sheets of paper once sat in his studio. That he handled them. That he returned to them.

When you see that stamp, the chain of ownership becomes real.

All four etchings have now been recently reframed and mounted. The aim with this process is not to make them look new, but to protect what time has already given them. The slight variations in paper tone, the soft edges and the delicate lines of the ink all remain visible. They are framed to be hung and lived with, not hidden away. After centuries of movement through different lives, they have reached another quiet pause.

We often think of history as something distant, something we visit in a museum. But to own something from this period brings it back to life as it hangs on a wall close to the modern technology that surrounds us. To live with something made in the 1500s is to accept that you are only one moment in a much longer timeline. These works survived wars, changing tastes, changing borders and changing owners. They will almost certainly outlive us, too.

As if this history and lineage were not enough, another name also appears with the works - that of the leading British Neoclassical sculptor Richard Westmacott (1775–1856). The rest of the note accompanying his name is now illegible, but given the dates, it is quite possible that Richard Westmacott purchased these at the 1795 sale, when he was a student at the Royal Academy.

All four etchings are now available to collect from my website (linked here) - assuming I don’t decide to keep them for myself. It’s hard to determine, on this occasion, what I love most - the artworks or the provenance. Let me know what you think in the comments x

It’s not like shopping on Amazon - you probably won’t get next-day delivery, but you can get it ahead of the big day if you start looking now.

Gift Ideas

That’s the hardest part, I think we would all agree? I often buy works of art for my family at Christmas because I know the styles and artists they like, and also how those pieces would look in their homes. But say you didn’t have all of this information, what are a few generic options you could look out for that could be as special and as expensive as you want them to be? They need to be neutral enough in terms of design and taste so they could fit in just about anywhere, but we are looking for a story and character to give them a special edge.

1. A Vase - It’s definitely possible to find a fantastic vase, or if your friend is a keen gardener, why not buy them an old terracotta planter? These can be not only beautiful but also useful, so they will have long-lasting meaning to the end user.

2. Candlestick holders - a personal favourite, and I have handled some amazing ones over the past couple of years, from those designed by Rennie Mackintosh (which went to an AMAZING rural home in Scotland - this sale was a personal high for me) to gorgeous mid-century brass Danish designs by artists such as Jens Quistgaard. Who wouldn’t appreciate candle holders at this time of the year - even the thought of it now is making me want to cosy up on the sofa right now.

3. Silverware - So, while the economy fluctuates, the prices of gold and silver have held their own. There are so many options here to fit most budgets. You could buy a cocktail shaker. A silver sauce boat? Silver Spoons? The list is endless, and the great thing about buying silver is the provenance that comes with an industry regulated for centuries. You can learn where your piece was made, when it was made, and even the maker through reading the hallmarked stamps on your item (note I personally am more familiar with UK and European makers, but there is so much information online about international silver, so plenty for people across the world to get their research teeth stuck into!).

4. Small artworks - if you know their colour scheme, you can normally find something fairly subtle to fit their decor. The aim here would be to find something with a story that you think will resonate with them. Be careful with size, and preferably keep it small, as you don’t want to overwhelm them

5. Books! Chances are, they have time off and time to read. Don’t use Amazon as your default. Whether it’s a first edition or just a rare/out-of-production book on their favourite topic. A gift of a book will ‘keep giving’ as they say, and, in today’s throwaway society, that’s something to be cherished.

Honestly, the choices are endless, and at the end of this post, I’m going to share a few suggestions based on pieces I’ve found online.

Where to look?

So the big question for many is where to start and what options are available over the next few weeks to secure a gift in time for Christmas?

1. Auctions - there is still time (!) but not much. Most Auction houses hold large sales at the beginning of December, so use online platforms such as The Sale Room to search for your gift. Remember, some auction houses offer delivery, so you can buy from anywhere in your country, or in others, as long as you look into delivery times first and remember to factor buyers’ commission into your budget (usually around 30% on the hammer price, including VAT, but it can be higher, so mind the auction house’s T&Cs)

2. Art & Antique dealers - Physical or online. There are so many of us out there, and you can search for ones local to you or, again, check the postage; most dealers are small and will go out of their way to get your parcel to you in plenty of time for Christmas. Most will also use couriers that ship internationally very quickly, so your options are bigger than you think.

3. Antique Fairs - there are still a few upcoming. I will create a separate post for London fairs this December, but have a look at your local newspapers or publications such as the Antiques Trade Gazette for listings by date in your area.

4. Online Platforms - This includes the likes of 1stdibs, Etsy, Vinterior, Pamano, to name only a few. Again, these are normally host to thousands of small antique dealers who will go out of their way to furnish you with the story behind their pieces and get them to you in plenty of time for Christmas

5. Ebay, Charity shops & Car boot/Garage sales - For more budget-friendly options, you have all of these at your disposal. They may require a bit more research on your part, but you never know what you can find if you’re in the right place at the right time!

I think I might have raised my geek level another notch.

I’ve been teaching myself a few AI tricks to improve my workflow. I often use the same prompts repeatedly when I’m doing research, so I thought it was about time I set them all up in advance to make things quicker in the future.

And the result: a custom GPT that helps you in your quest to identify the artist behind a piece you may have bought (when the artist was unknown at the time of purchase).

A Few Caveats

When I’m researching (not writing), I use multiple AI and web sources - from Google through to Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Claude. I’m sure there’s one that’s even better, and I’m waiting to discover it.

I also use books and old auction catalogues (thanks to my mum, mostly, who has collected a thorough back catalogue over the years from London sales). Many of these aren’t online, but some are, and sometimes the old-fashioned way is still the most accurate. I share links to these sources over in the Resource Library for anyone who’s interested.

This GPT is a starting point, and I’m curious to see where it takes us as AI tech keeps evolving (we all know it’s a bit sketchy at times, no?).

As a retailer, the first lesson you learn is to take your lead from the consumer and make sure you match their expectations, so why do Black Friday offers feel so ‘off’ for small brands and retailers?

I’ve had my business for over two years, and this is the first time I am offering a Black Friday discount, and why? Because I realised I had to get over my ego and go with the flow.

There is a kind of elitism that comes with the Art & Antiques market. A sense that these types of businesses not only don’t want to show a ‘need’ to discount, but that it’s brand-damaging. The latter point is an interesting one, and one I have probably held for many years. Working in corporate retail, we watched consumer demand rise on Black Friday year after year, and there was a strong sense of giving customers the discount they wanted before they took their money elsewhere. At first, like most people, this horrified me, because you knew that once you start offering discounts, there is likely to be some sort of expectation/precedent set, and you might set a barrier to full-price sales in the future. But at some point, it became too late.

So what are the alternatives? Some brands give a % of their profits to charity, some offer free gifts with purchase, and some are thinking even more creatively, giving their staff the day off to do charity work, etc. All are compelling in some way, but arguably less compelling than a discount?

Anyway, it’s just a weekend, right? Well, we all know it’s more than that, but that’s the thing, it really is up to us to pick what’s right for us and go with it without feeling judgment for taking part or not, and for how we take part.

Do I wish retail had never jumped on this rollercoaster? - Yes. Do I think it’s smart to participate? - Well, maybe not smart, but maybe it’s not so stupid after all. What you lose in margin will always be worse than what you lose in sales.

In all honesty, my mind is tired right now. With decisions to be made every day, sometimes you have to just pick something and go with it, so 20% off sitewide, it is!

Maybe next year I will think of something much more interesting - working with a charity would probably be my preference at some point. If anyone has any ideas, please share them in the comments, and I will write them down for next year (!) and, then…. maybe I will do things a bit more creatively.

Right now, after years of minimalist greys, cool metals, and interiors that leaned towards austerity, there’s a noticeable shift back toward warmth and comfort in our homes. I don’t know about you, but when I think of Art Deco, the first thing that comes to mind is the lighting. In fact, I use bakelite table lamps, with milky glass shades, on my bedside tables - how lovely that they still seem so relevant in today’s interiors. But lighting is just a small part - think beautiful curved wooden furniture, velvet sofas, geometric patterns, and so much depth of colour. As we return to so many of these styles, perhaps we are craving tactility and atmosphere in our homes.

In that context, Art Deco makes perfect sense.

It offers structure, elegance, craftsmanship and pleasure in detail — without being fussy. It bridges ornament and modernity in a way that feels current again. That balance is powerful, and we’re seeing it everywhere: from furniture silhouettes and glass lighting to ceramics, textile design, and graphic motifs.

For Collectors

Interior trends move slowly, but they absolutely influence collecting. As palettes warm and interiors soften, collectors are gravitating toward:

• Curved silhouettes (mirrors, seating, sculpture)

• Rich woods (walnut, mahogany, satinwood)

• Bakelite and early plastics (jewellery, buttons, objects)

• Chrome and brass lighting with sculptural forms

And just like fashion, the trends that resonate with you often arise from a mix of conscious and subconscious factors. Sometimes it’s practicality — the size of your home or your budget — and sometimes it’s something deeper: a response to past experiences, memories, or your own internal back catalogue of what you consider “good taste.”

Why We Keep Coming Back to ‘Old’ Ideas

It’s fair to say that interior trends move more slowly than fashion trends, and with good reason. Few of us can afford to keep replacing big-ticket items such as sofas or dining tables — the cornerstone pieces that define our homes. Greater awareness around waste, and a shift away from mass production, also make us think twice before every purchase in a way we might not have before.

The first thing I ever bought at auction probably wasn’t what you’d expect — a button collection from a lady who had been collecting all her life. By buying it, I became the custodian of something she had clearly poured her time, care, and knowledge into.

Inside the collection are buttons from the 19th century through to the late 20th — delicate Victorian examples, colourful Art Deco designs, bakelite styles from the 1930s, and even playful Mary Quant-inspired buttons from the 1960s. The appeal of a button collection might be lost on some, but to me it felt precious.

Each button, or set, had been chosen for a reason. Each one told a story — a small piece of design and craftsmanship history. That’s when I realised collecting isn’t primarily a financial act; it’s a creative one.

So, if you’re wondering how to start collecting art or antiques, here’s what I’ve learned.

Start with What You Love

Your first collection doesn’t need to impress anyone else — it’s just for you. Think about the objects you’re naturally drawn to: maybe paintings, ceramics, furniture, or jewellery. Is there a particular design period, artist, or maker you’ve always admired?

Start small, buy what you love, and let your taste develop. The more you look, the more confident your eye becomes — and that’s when collecting really starts to feel personal.

Learn Before You Spend

Before you make any big purchases, take time to research and observe.

• Visit exhibitions and art fairs.

• Explore museum collections and note what catches your eye.

• Read auction catalogues and compare price ranges.

• Use trusted databases and resources (like those in my Resource Library).

Keep a notebook or digital list of the artists, makers, and styles that interest you. Over time, you’ll start to recognise patterns and trends — your own small database of knowledge that guides your choices.

Train Your Eye

Collecting is about observation and experience. Over time, you’ll develop that so-called “gut feel,” but it’s really just knowledge built through looking closely.

Compare similar pieces to understand what makes one more desirable or valuable than another. Learn to recognise condition, restoration, and authenticity issues. Like many collectors, I’ve made mistakes — sometimes by trusting the wrong description or ignoring my instincts. When something doesn’t feel right, it’s usually because it isn’t.

If you’re buying online, don’t rely solely on front-facing photos. Study the back, the base, the materials — the details often reveal the truth.

Keep to a Budget

This is often the hardest part. When you fall in love with something, all sense can go out the window.

Whether you collect purely for pleasure or partly as an investment, it helps to set boundaries. Avoid rushing into purchases and learn the rhythms of the market. Buying less but buying better is the collector’s greatest lesson.

Record Provenance and Keep Notes

Every object carries a story — not just of its maker, but of everyone who has owned it. When you buy an antique, you’re adding a new chapter to its life.

Keep receipts, certificates, auction lot details, and any correspondence with sellers. Photograph your pieces and store details somewhere safe. These records will become part of your own provenance trail, making your collection more valuable and meaningful over time. I have made the mistake of assuming I won’t forget about something (something a seller has told me about a piece), but it’s easily done, and once that knowledge is gone, it’s gone.

Build Knowledge Through Community

One of the best ways to grow as a collector is through community. Social media, when used thoughtfully, can be an incredible tool for learning. Follow galleries, museums, and curators. Listen to podcasts, attend lectures, or visit auctions simply to observe.

And don’t underestimate the generosity of dealers — I used to feel incredibly intimidated to ask people to share their expertise but most are happy to share knowledge with someone who’s genuinely interested.

Let It Evolve

Like anything creative, collecting changes as we do. Your taste will shift, and that’s perfectly normal. You might start with Art Deco ceramics and later find yourself drawn to 1960s Brutalism or Scandinavian modernism.

Refining a collection isn’t losing interest — it’s deepening it. By keeping your pieces in good condition and with proper paperwork, you can always sell selectively to fund new directions.

Collectors don’t hoard — they curate.

Where I’m At Now

I’m currently refining my own collection too. About fifteen years ago, I bought a lot of urban art, but today my taste has evolved. Apart from a few sentimental favourites, I plan to put the rest into auction next month.

Lately, I’ve been drawn to neutral tones and rich wood textures — especially pre 20th century oak carvings — so I’m freeing up funds to invest in those.

That’s the beauty of collecting: it’s a reflection of where you are now, as much as it is a love letter to the past.

Leaving the corporate world felt like freedom.
The first few months after over twenty solid years felt like pure relief.
The structure I’d felt bound by — Monday sales meetings, seasonal trading patterns, and all the reporting — was gone… and suddenly so was my momentum.

When you work for yourself, the only person you’re accountable to is yourself.
That can be great, but if you let it, it can slow you down.
You start making excuses to yourself that you’d never have made when working for someone else, but you are also very aware that the only person you are letting down is yourself.

Thankfully, years of discipline leave a sort of muscle memory — and all that structure turned out to be a gift.

What I Carried Over from Corporate

On Mondays, I now have my own little sales meeting — and there’s always 100% attendance (well usually).
I go through my sales, check delivery priorities, and I also scour the auction listings for the week ahead to see if there’s anything I’m planning to source.

I plan my diary for the rest of the week — any fairs or shows I want to attend- and I set a few mini-targets for myself.
I think about seasonal calendars too: gifting at Christmas, peak selling periods, the usual retail patterns.

And I even try to plan in a social life around it when I can.

Discipline as a Friend

I started to rethink my view of discipline.
I began to remind myself that by setting clear boundaries for discipline, it would actually support rather than stifle creativity.

If I get all the “business” stuff done, then there’s more space left for the fun things.
Small examples go a long way — like planning delivery drop-offs so they coincide with a visit to my favourite cake shop, or near a friend’s office so we can meet for a glass of wine.

I couldn’t control my agenda before, but now I can — so I might as well take advantage of it.

A Question of Balance

It’s all a question of balance.
Too much structure kills play and makes you wonder why you’re putting yourself through all the stress of running your own business on a lower salary.
But too little structure stalls a business and stops you from moving forward.

Right now, my aim is to keep Fridays clear so I can do the things I love, like writing to you here on Substack.
It feels therapeutic — without wanting to trauma-dump on you too much, of course.

Summary

The two worlds of creativity and structure aren’t at odds.
Structure and discipline can actually protect the sometimes fragile nature of creativity.

On Tuesday I shared my 5 steps to researching an artwork — a simple framework I use whenever I start digging into a new piece.
Today I’m putting those same steps into practice with a real example: a recently-acquired portrait believed to depict Elizabeth Bernard, Shakespeare’s only grand-child to reach adulthood.

The portrait’s reverse bears an intriguing inscription that has already led us down several paths — from handwriting quirks to genealogical clues.
It’s still very much a work-in-progress, but I thought you might enjoy following the investigation as it unfolds in real time.

Step 1: Start with the Object Itself – A Name and a Mystery

Just as in Step 1 of Tuesday’s guide — Start with the object itself — I began by examining the portrait closely, front and back, to spot any initial clues.

The painting arrived with an intriguing backstory — or at least, some intriguing writing on the back of the canvas.

Some of it is legible, some isn’t. The immediate question: does the inscription name the sitter, the commissioner, or the artist?

The condition of the picture is fair for its age but it looks like someone has re-stretched or reframed it at some point and the paintwork has suffered some damage as a result. Often portraits like these were framed in oval frames and I think this could have been the case with this painting.

However, in this case front and centre in the discussion is one name:

About Elizabeth Bernard

So, who is the lady in the picture — and can we assume it’s Elizabeth Bernard?

Elizabeth Bernard (1618 – 1670) was Shakespeare’s only grand-child to reach adulthood — the daughter of his elder child Susanna and the Stratford physician Dr John Hall.
Twice married, first to Thomas Nash of Stratford and later to John Barnard of Abington Hall, she became known as Lady Barnard after her second husband’s knighthood.
She died childless, bringing an end to Shakespeare’s direct blood-line.
Any portrait that can be securely linked to her is therefore of real historic interest.

Elizabeth Bernard – Key Dates

• 1618: Born in Stratford-upon-Avon — the only child of Susanna Shakespeare and Dr John Hall.

• 1626: Married Thomas Nash, a wealthy Stratford gentleman.

• 1635: Death of her father, Dr John Hall.

• 1647: Widowed on the death of Thomas Nash; inherited further property, including New Place and houses on Henley Street.

• 1649: Married John Barnard of Abington Hall, Northamptonshire.

• c 1650s: Moved to Abington Hall; later styled Lady Barnard after her husband’s knighthood.

• 1670 (17 Feb): Died aged about 52 at Abington; buried in Abington church beneath a memorial tablet recording her as “Elizabeth Barnard, grand-daughter to William Shakespeare, wife to Sir John Barnard Kt.”

Step 2: Gather Clues from Labels and Marks – Reading the Inscription

In Step 2 of the framework — Gather clues from labels and marks — the focus is on every stamp, inscription or sticker. For this portrait, that meant photographing the writing on the reverse under raking light.

I photographed the back in normal daylight, then used raking light from a phone torch to cast shadows across the ink.
On the laptop I boosted contrast, inverted the colours and cropped the lettering at macro scale.

What emerged was clearer than the naked eye could see: the first cluster of strokes formed a capital D with a small ‘r’, plus an x-shaped stop-mark and a bar above the r — the old-fashioned 17th-century abbreviation “Dr̄” for Doctor.

That was the first real breakthrough: the inscription wasn’t just a random squiggle; it was deliberately written in an early-modern hand.

Step 3: Compare and Cross-Reference – Deciphering the Next Word

Following Step 3 of Tuesday’s post — Compare and cross-reference — I looked closely at the letter forms using raking-light photos, historical handwriting charts and period references.

The next tall, curling capital sparked the biggest debate.
At first I thought it was a ‘Y’, but further research showed that in 17th-century script the letter ‘H’ was often formed in a similar curling style.
So what did the line say — “Dr H…”?

• a curly H → perhaps Hall, Howley, Hawley, Henley…

• a forked Y → which led us to consider Young or Youell

• or part of a place-name → “… House / Yardley…”

Enhanced close-ups suggest two rounded arches after that tall letter — probably “ou” or “oa” — and an ending that rises like “… ey” or “… ly”.

As part of this stage I also began comparing the portrait’s style to known painters active in England during the 1640-1660s.
Artists such as Robert Walker (Parliamentarian portraits), Cornelius Janssens van Ceulen (noted for elegant half-length likenesses), early-period Peter Lely-school works, and the later but hugely influential Sir Godfrey Kneller, whose style dominated English portraiture toward the end of the century, were all worth consideration.

Looking at the sitter’s pose, drapery and face-shaping alongside these examples can help us narrow down both the likely date and the possible studio that produced the work.
That said, there wasn’t a single perfect stylistic match to any one of these artists — a reminder of how tricky attribution can be without solid documentary evidence.
This is exactly the point where it becomes essential to take the investigation to museum curators and portrait specialists for their trained eye.

Step 4: Trace Provenance and Paperwork – The Word Pinxit and a Family Clue

As in Step 4 of the guide — Trace provenance and paperwork — the next breakthrough came from historical context: genealogy records and period Latin usage.

After the mysterious letters comes a clearer word: Pinxit — the Latin term meaning “he/she painted it.”
That raised more questions: is it a genuine artist’s signature, or part of a longer descriptive line?

At first I assumed the “Dr̄” must refer to a medical doctor — naturally thinking of Elizabeth’s father, Dr John Hall, the Stratford physician.
But 17th-century usage reminded me that the title “Doctor” wasn’t limited to physicians; it was also used for academics or anyone of a learned profession.
That opened a new possibility: the “Dr̄” could refer not only to her father but potentially to the artist himself — a painter who held a learned or academic title.

Genealogy still provided a strong lead: in parish and marriage records Elizabeth is often described as

“Elizabeth Barnard, daughter of Dr Hall of Henley Street, Stratford.”

That phrasing suddenly made sense of the canvas: the second line may never have been a personal artist’s signature at all, but rather a descriptor — “Dr Hall …” or “of Henley …” — identifying her parentage or residence.

Step 4 continued – Dating the Handwriting

The tiny bar over the ‘r’ and the little cross-mark after it are typical of late-17th- to early-18th-century inscriptions.
By the 1800s people were already writing “Dr.” with a full stop, so the script itself supports an inscription contemporary with (or only slightly later than) Elizabeth’s lifetime.

Another detail: the formation of the letter D.
In the 1600s and early 1700s the bow of the D often had a slight outward flourish — a style that later disappeared as the letter became more standardised.
This also supports the idea that the canvas was painted during her lifetime.

Step 5: Seek Expert Opinions – Next Steps

Finally — Step 5 of Tuesday’s framework — Seek expert opinions: the stage where we move beyond our own digging to consult specialists.

The research is still unfolding.
Next, we plan to:

• Photograph the inscription again under raking light from several angles to catch any surviving traces of the middle letters.

• Compare the portrait’s style with painters of the 1640-60s such as Robert Walker, Cornelius Janssens van Ceulen or early Lely-school works.

• Consult the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and the National Portrait Gallery for curatorial opinions.

Just as I was about to hit publish on this post, I stumbled across the Hoadley family — and, intriguingly, the younger Dr Benjamin Hoadly was both a physician and a painter, albeit just after Elizabeth Bernard’s lifetime. It feels like one of those moments where the threads begin to connect. If the inscription on the back really does read “Dr Hoadly pinxit,” could this be one of his antiquarian interpretations? There was once a portrait of Elizabeth Barnard at Abington Hall — long since untraced. I can’t help wondering… could this be it?

This investigation is far from over, but that’s exactly what makes research so compelling: every clue opens a new line of questioning.
